More recently, a cultivated strain of Wolffia globosa — referred to as Wolffia globosa Mankai — became the subject of serious nutritional science. That context matters when evaluating safety, because how plants behave as whole foods incorporated into a balanced diet can be quite different from how they behave as isolated nutrients at extreme supplemental doses. Most of the clinical research on Wolffia globosa — and its positive safety profile — comes from humans consuming it as food, not as a high-dose isolated supplement.

The most significant body of research comes from the DIRECT-PLUS trial (NCT03020186), run by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. This was a large, rigorous randomized controlled trial involving over 200 participants with obesity and metabolic dysfunction.

Participants were split into three groups: a control group that followed general dietary guidelines, a Mediterranean diet group, and a green Mediterranean diet group. That's a meaningful body of evidence. Not everything is perfectly settled — long-term standalone safety data on Wolffia globosa as a single-ingredient supplement is still limited — but the clinical research on humans puts it well ahead of most functional foods in terms of actual scientific credibility.

What the Clinical Research Found on Safety

The overall picture from the research: no significant adverse effects at typical consumption levels in healthy adults.

In the 2-week randomized crossover intervention with type 2 diabetes patients — where participants consumed 30g of Wolffia globosa Mankai daily — no adverse effects related to the intervention were reported.

The green Mediterranean diet studies running for 18 months, with daily Wolffia globosa consumption as part of the dietary intervention, similarly reported no meaningful safety issues from the diet intervention itself.

What the Toxicology Studies Show

A subchronic toxicity study conducted in rats fed very high concentrations of dried Wolffia globosa biomass — at the middle dose level — found no pathological adverse effects in organ histology. The no-observed adverse effect level established in that study was far above any practical human consumption level.

So at the headline level: Wolffia globosa is safe to eat.

But a few specific situations and populations do warrant more nuance. Here they are.

Manganese: The One the Research Flags Most

This is the concern that comes up most prominently in formal safety assessments of Wolffia globosa.

Manganese is a trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for things like metabolism, bone formation, and antioxidant enzyme function. It's found in many foods — especially leafy greens, legumes, nuts, whole grains, and similar plant foods. Like most vitamins and minerals, it's beneficial in appropriate amounts and problematic in excess. Wolffia globosa contains elevated levels of manganese relative to most common vegetables and foods.

What the EFSA Review Actually Said

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conducted a detailed review of Wolffia globosa powder as a novel food. The EFSA panel's primary concern wasn't that manganese is toxic at normal dietary intake levels — it isn't. Their concern was that consuming Wolffia globosa as a daily supplement at the proposed maximum dose could meaningfully increase total manganese intake above dietary background levels, and there's no established upper intake limit for oral manganese in the EU to clearly define what "safe" looks like at higher doses.

To be specific: EFSA estimated that adults consuming Wolffia globosa as a food supplement at maximum proposed levels could see manganese intake increase by around 39% above the highest mean background dietary manganese intake. That's a notable addition.

The Practical Reality for Everyday Consumption

The human trials — including the 18-month green Mediterranean diet intervention — consumed Wolffia globosa as whole food incorporated into a diet. Not at extreme supplemental doses. And no manganese-related adverse effects were observed in those intervention groups.

What this means practically: eating Wolffia globosa as a food ingredient is almost certainly fine for healthy adults. Taking it as a concentrated supplement at very high daily doses, long-term, warrants a bit more thought — especially for people who already eat a lot of manganese-rich foods.

Allergic Reactions: Worth Knowing About

Wolffia globosa contains about 40–50% protein by dry weight, making it one of the most protein-rich plants you can consume.

As with any high-protein food — legumes, eggs, fish, nuts — there is a theoretical possibility of triggering allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, particularly those with existing plant protein allergies.

What the Clinical Evidence Actually Shows

That said, Wolffia globosa has a long history of use as food in Southeast Asia, and there are no documented widespread allergic reactions associated with it in the clinical literature. The amino acid profile of Wolffia globosa Mankai is well characterized, and its protein digestibility — measured by the PDCAAS score — comes in at 89%, comparable to soy protein isolate.

In all published clinical trials, participants consumed Wolffia globosa Mankai regularly across extended intervention periods without reported allergic events.

Wolffia globosa is an aquatic plant. It lives in water and absorbs nutrients — and potentially contaminants — from its growth environment. Aquatic plants can accumulate heavy metals like cadmium, arsenic, and lead if the water or fertilizers used in cultivation are contaminated.

This isn't unique to Wolffia globosa. It's the same dynamic you see with fish accumulating mercury from water, or leafy plants absorbing compounds from soil. Environmental contamination is a real variable for a lot of whole foods — it's a reason why sourcing and production quality matter across vegetables, grains, and herbs, not just aquatic plants.

What Controlled Cultivation Actually Produces

The key finding from the research: under controlled cultivation conditions with clean water and rigorously tested fertilizer compositions, safety assessments of Wolffia globosa have confirmed that heavy metal levels in dried biomass fall well below established food safety thresholds. Batch testing of commercially produced Wolffia globosa Mankai dried biomass has consistently shown heavy metals — arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury — below harmful limits. The nutritional composition remains intact and the safety profile holds up when cultivation is properly managed.

The practical lesson is simple: where and how Wolffia globosa is grown matters.

Wolffia globosa produced under proper agricultural standards, with water quality control and regular safety testing, is safe. Wolffia globosa harvested from unknown or unmonitored water sources is a different situation entirely.

This is one reason I've been deliberate about partnering with established farms in Thailand that operate under verified quality controls. Sourcing isn't a detail. It's part of what makes Wolffia globosa a legitimate functional food rather than a risk.

Phylloquinone and Blood Thinners: A Specific Group Should Know This

Wolffia globosa contains phylloquinone — a naturally occurring form of Vitamin K. That's actually a good thing for most people. Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting, bone metabolism, and cardiovascular health. It's one of the vitamins that makes Wolffia globosa nutritionally impressive.

The Exception: Anticoagulant Medication

But there's a specific group for whom this is relevant: people taking anticoagulant medications like warfarin or other coumarin-based blood thinners.

Higher Vitamin K intake can influence how these medications work. The EFSA safety assessment noted that at supplement doses, phylloquinone intake from Wolffia globosa could reach levels that might potentially interfere with anticoagulant therapy.

This is the same conversation doctors already have with patients on blood thinners about eating spinach, kale, and broccoli — all of which are high in Vitamin K. If you're on anticoagulant medication, talk to your doctor before adding any meaningful new source of Vitamin K to your diet, including Wolffia globosa. Whole foods consumed in typical quantities are generally manageable, but your doctor needs to know.

Oxalic Acid: Context Makes This a Non-Issue for Most People

A few people have asked about oxalic acid — a naturally occurring compound found in many green vegetables that can, in large quantities, contribute to kidney stone formation.

Wolffia globosa does contain oxalic acid. Here's the context that makes this a non-issue for most people: the oxalic acid content found in Wolffia globosa falls within the normal range for commonly consumed green vegetables. Spinach, for example, contains around 700 mg per 100g. Brussels sprouts come in even higher. Wolffia globosa sits comfortably in the same territory as vegetables most people eat regularly without concern.

If you currently eat green vegetables without worrying about oxalic acid — which most people do — Wolffia globosa is not adding a new category of risk.

The Green Mediterranean Diet Research: What It Actually Found

A big part of what makes Wolffia globosa genuinely interesting from a safety and efficacy standpoint is the quality of the research behind the green Mediterranean diet.

In the DIRECT-PLUS studies, participants assigned to the green Mediterranean diet intervention consumed Wolffia globosa Mankai shakes as a daily dinner substitute, combined with green tea and walnuts, within the overall Mediterranean diet framework. This was the most intensive dietary intervention tested.

The Outcomes Across 18 Months

The green Mediterranean diet group showed several meaningful outcomes compared to both the control group and the standard Mediterranean diet group:

  • Improved glycemic control — reduced blood glucose spikes after meals and improvements in insulin sensitivity that were more pronounced in the green Mediterranean diet group than in the Mediterranean diet group alone.
  • Reductions in liver fat — associations with lower risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Improved iron homeostasis — hemoglobin, serum iron, and transferrin saturation all increased in the green Mediterranean diet group compared to the control group and the Mediterranean diet group.
  • Slower hippocampal volume decline — after 18 months, the green Mediterranean diet group showed the slowest decline in hippocampus volume, the brain region most associated with memory and learning.
  • Weight loss — participants in the green Mediterranean diet showed more pronounced weight loss outcomes compared to the control group, with positive changes in body composition.
  • Improvements in cardiometabolic risk markers — including lipid profiles, blood pressure, and inflammation markers, with better outcomes in the humans following the green Mediterranean diet than those in the standard Mediterranean diet group.

No Adverse Effects Across Any of It

None of these outcomes in humans came with safety concerns or negative findings. Across multiple randomized controlled trial publications from the same large intervention, Wolffia globosa Mankai shows up as a meaningful contributor to health outcomes within the context of a polyphenol-rich diet pattern rich in functional foods.

The green Mediterranean diet isn't just a Mediterranean diet with a single swap. It's a version of the Mediterranean diet built around functional food ingredients — whole plants with real nutrients behind them — and the research to back it up. Wolffia globosa Mankai is central to that.

Who Should Be More Careful

To keep it simple:

  • Most healthy adults can add Wolffia globosa to their diet at typical food-level quantities without any meaningful safety concern, based on current research. The vitamins, minerals, protein, and other nutrients it provides fall within normal dietary ranges when consumed as food.

  • Pregnant individuals and children — the EFSA safety assessment specifically flagged these groups as warranting caution with novel foods, particularly in raw form due to potential microbial risks. Consuming any novel plant food during pregnancy warrants checking in with a healthcare provider.
  • Anyone with known plant protein allergies should introduce Wolffia globosa gradually and pay attention to how their body responds, just as they would with any new high-protein food.
  • Anyone purchasing Wolffia globosa should pay attention to sourcing. This is not a "buy the cheapest option" ingredient. Quality-controlled cultivation conditions are part of what makes the safety data applicable to the actual foods and supplements you consume.

The Bottom Line
